Great Wisdom offers a challenging and enriching program of study, cultivating skills and knowledge for Buddhist scholarship and ministry.  Our distinguished faculty, globally recognized in Buddhist philosophy and practice, guides education across three academic levels: introductory, intermediate, and advanced.  (similar to an undergraduate, masters and doctoral education)  These levels encompass four main areas of study.

Five Great Treatises

Great Wisdom is the sole Western institution offering the esteemed "Five Great Treatises" curriculum to women, leading to the prestigious geshema recognition. Currently awarding diplomas, we aim to grant academic degrees in the future.

Foundations of Buddhist Practice

Integrating the profound "Five Great Treatises" curriculum, this area emphasizes applying Buddhist philosophy in daily life. Through dynamic discussions, students navigate challenges, observing how these philosophies empower overcoming obstacles.

Buddhist Monasticism and Ministry

Preparing women for roles in Buddhist monasticism and broader ministry, our dynamic courses equip graduates for diverse professions, including teaching, scholarship, and sutra translations.

Language Study for Sutra Translations

Our innovative program prepares students for sutra translations, preserving invaluable heritage. Focused on classical Tibetan and Chinese, students master translation skills, ensuring accurate and accessible renditions.

Great Wisdom embraces a dynamic class of approximately 30 students every two years, with variations based on factors like applications and available resources. Our Admissions Committee seeks passionate learners committed to serving others, ensuring a competitive yet inclusive selection process. Admittance is limited, reflecting our commitment to creating a harmonious learning environment within our current resources.
